These medications kill the bacteria that cause acne. When antibiotics do not work, isotretinoin may be prescribed. This medication reduces the size of the oil glands and thus the amount of oil they produce. Because of the intense potential side effects of isotretinoin, this medication is usually only prescribed in severe cases. A third internal medication that can be used to treat adult acne or severe teen breakouts is hormone therapy. Restoring the proper balance of hormones in the body reduces the appearance of acne on the skin.
