What is Acne?
Acne is one of these very visible skin conditions and though everyone afflicted by it wishes there were a cure, well, there is none. But do not despair. Appropriate acne skincare can help to contain the condition and bring partial relief, at least in cases that are not serious.
What causes Acne?
First, let’s understand what acne is to before we explore different kinds of acne skincare. Acne is not cause by bad hygiene so don’t try and wash acne away! This will only cause your skin to dry further, peel and invite more bacteria!
Acne is caused by excess oil produced by the oil glands in the skin – the sebaceous glands – in which the hair follicle resides. The cause is usually hormonal, that is, when there is an imbalance leading to excess production of androgen or the male hormone.
Does everyone suffer from them?
Predictably, it strikes usually due to adolescence in both girls and boys and can persist for years. This is why managing the condition, rather than trying to get rid of it, is the best way to approach the condition.
Excess oil production causes the lining of the hair follicle to break off and remain in the follicle. This combination of dead skin and oil form a plug, blocking the pore and formed a solid comedone.
When the comedone forms a visible bump, you see a whitehead and when the bump opens up, it’s called a blackhead. The condition also encourages the formation of bacteria and the pore, filled with oily sebum, gets infected.
As the bacteria grow and build up, infection also builds up, leading to the formation of papules, pustules, cysts and nodules, depending on the severity of the condition. This is what causes the ugly, bumpy appearance of the skin, often accompanied by redness.
By way of acne skincare, there are a variety of cleansers, moisturizers, cosmetics and foundations available on the market. But choose then and use them with care. Consulting a dermatologist may not be a bad option before you pick a product off the shelf.
How to manage Acne?
First, some thumb rules. Always keep your skin clean and moist. This does not mean you should wash your face several times a day. Doing that would only result in excessively dry and scaly skin that would in turn aggravate the acne.
When drying your skin, gently daub it with a towel so that the pimples do not get aggravated and burst. Also, never pick your skin. Remember, when an acne pimple bursts, the oozing pus facilitates the spread of the bacteria in the follicle, thus causing more pimples to appear!
Herbal Remedies for Acne
People who suffer from acne should always be careful about the methods and products used to cleanse the skin. You should always choose a gentle herbal cleanser to clean the dirt off your skin. Also, excessive washing of the skin can aggravate the condition. Same is to be done with cosmetics and moisturizers. Some Herbal acne treatments that are very useful in the prevention and cure of acne are- Chamomile, lavender, juniper, bergamot, dandelion root, and burdock root which can all be used to reduce toxicity in the skin and improve its overall condition. Other herbs like Echinacea and Poke root have anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce the swelling of the blocked oil gland.
Today’s market is flooded with products for treating acne, but herbal acne treatments are one of the well-known and highly preferred option by patients who are not ready to take any risks.
